Understanding the EGBC Competency Framework

Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia requires engineering applicants to demonstrate 34 competencies across seven categories through its online competency reporting system. Each competency example is self rated on a scale from 0 to 5 and must be confirmed by a validator who directly observed your work. Applicants generally need at least four years of engineering experience, including at least one year in a Canadian environment.

Geoscience applicants follow a separate framework aligned with national guidance from Geoscientists Canada, with workplace examples covering professionalism, the scientific method, your area of geoscience practice and complementary competencies.

The Four Building Blocks of the EGBC Competency Framework

1. Competency Categories

The framework groups 34 competencies into seven categories: technical competence, communication, project and financial management, team effectiveness, professional accountability, social, economic, environmental and sustainability considerations, and personal continuing professional development.

2. Key Competencies

Within each category sit the individual key competencies, behavioural descriptions of what you must have demonstrated in your career. Every key competency needs its own workplace example and must score at least level 1 on the rating scale, regardless of how strong your other examples are.

3. Competency Levels

The competency rating scale runs from 0 to 5 across six levels, from little or no exposure through supervised work up to independent practice and expert judgment. Category minimums are typically set at level 2 or level 3, and your average within each category must meet or exceed that minimum.

4. Indicators

EGBC publishes indicators for every key competency, specific actions, activities and behaviours that count as valid evidence. We select your examples directly against these indicators so assessors immediately recognise the required evidence in your writing.

EGBC generally requires at least four years of acceptable engineering experience, including a minimum of one year in a Canadian environment. Experience gained during postgraduate study may be partially credited in some cases.
