The PEO Competency Based Assessment

Professional Engineers Ontario adopted the Competency Based Assessment for licence applications in May 2023, replacing the older experience record format. Applicants now document 34 competencies across seven categories based on the national Engineers Canada framework. Each competency requires a specific workplace example, a self rating from 0 to 5, and confirmation from validators.

The NPPE Requirement for Ontario Applicants

PEO now uses the National Professional Practice Exam, the same 2.5 hour, 110 question multiple choice exam used by twelve regulators across Canada, replacing the older Ontario essay format exam. It covers professional ethics, engineering law, liability and professional practice, and prospective applicants must pass it before submitting a licence application. The Seven Categories You Must Cover for PEO

Your 34 examples span technical competence, communication, project and financial management, team effectiveness, professional accountability, social, economic, environmental and sustainability considerations, and personal continuing professional development. Each category has a minimum average on the 0 to 5 scale. We plan which projects cover which categories before writing a word, so no category is left thin.

P.Eng Salary in Ontario

Licensed professional engineers in Ontario typically earn between CAD 90,000 and CAD 125,000 per year based on Job Bank and salary survey data, with Toronto technology, financial infrastructure, nuclear and construction employers paying more for licensed candidates who can take professional responsibility. The P.Eng also protects your title and unlocks signing authority under Ontario law.
